The West Texas Team Trail visited the beautiful Lake Amistad on May 23rd for the
5th tournament of the year. The tournament for this month had been scheduled on
Possum Kingdom Lake. But, the golden algae bloom made it imperative to move the
tournament lake and eventually, the date.
Mother Nature knew there was a tournament on Amistad, so She kicked up the
southeast winds to 25 mph on Saturday, the official prefishing day. She really
gave us a treat on Sunday with 30 mph winds out of the south. This created waves
from 4' to 6' tall on the different parts of the main lake. Some teams battled
those waves to head North to the best fishing spots and take home some checks.
Others came in early with completely dead trolling motor batteries. I personally
had a rouge wave come over the bow while I was on the trolling motor that hit me
in the waist and actually hit my partner that was sitting in the back deck seat.
We decided real quick that it was time to seek calmer waters.
The team of Young and Burris had the second largest bass of the tournament that
weighed 7.66 pounds and helped them take a comanding lead of 27.44 pounds. They
reported catching their fish mostly on a top water bite with a magnum Zara Spook
in some semi-protected coves.
The second place team of Jones and Gillihan had the largest bass of the day at
7.92 and helped them take second place by only 1/100 of a pound over third
place. Their total weight was 23.26 pounds.
The third place team of Markham and Denison needed another drop of water to tie
the second place team. They had a 6.46 pounder to help them weigh in 23.25
pounds.

Our final qualifying tournament of 2010 will be on beautiful Lake Hubbard
Creek in Breckenridge on June 6th. The Angler Of The Year title race is
extremely tight and will be decided at this tournament.
